100+ Sustainable Alternatives To Classic Christmas Gifts
Whether it’s for an Aunty you only see at Christmas or a neighbour who really helped you out this year, physical gifts have a time and a place: I refuse to be the Sustainable Christmas Grinch and tell you otherwise. Of course I’m a big believer in experiences and quality time over physical gifts, but no matter how hard I try, every single Christmas I end up buying a gift. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing!
This Christmas, use your buying power to support small businesses who create amazing products that your loved ones will treasure, devour, wear or use.
With the help of thousands of people in my Instagram community, I’ve curated a list of 21 classic Christmas presents and provided you with at least 4 sustainable alternatives for each present category. If I’ve done my job right (I’ve been working on this since early September!), this is the only blog you’ll need in order to complete your Christmas shopping this year. You’ll find discount codes to make your money go further too!
Note: Every brand included was chosen because they are brilliant. Brands with main features are the key sponsors of this blog post: without them, this huge piece of work couldn’t have happened. Thanks also to my researcher Stef and editor Emma for their help with this!

Chocolates
This might be THE most tokenistic Christmas gift of them all: a box of chocolates. It’s consumable, it’s loveable, it’s ritualistic and traditional. But after learning about the troubling ethics of the chocolate industry and publishing this eye opening ethical chocolate blog, I simply will not buy a box of Favourites, Scorched Almonds, Roses, Ferrero Rocher, Lindt or Toblerone as a traditional Christmas gift again. Thankfully we have so many ethical options here in Aotearoa New Zealand!
If you love sweets with a side of whimsy, Baron Hasselhoff’s is a local favourite in Wellington. Their handcrafted chocolates and baked treats are made using the finest, ethically sourced ingredients. A gift that’s as delightful for the planet as it is for the taste buds. Plus, they have groovy sustainable advent calendars to enjoy in the lead up to Christmas!
Socks
Socks are nearly as universal as chocolate, yet gosh they can be poor quality. This year it would be epic if you could use your hard earned money to support a brand who pays the people who make their socks fairly and uses sustainable materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and wool. Your family and friends are bound to love these ethical Christmas presents!

Do Better Colab are the perfect gift for the sporty people in your life this Christmas. They create high performance sports and ski socks from organic cotton! Do Better Colab are a rare find; sustainable sports socks are hard to come by. I admire their focus on transparency and progress and love their range of colours and sizes that aren’t gender specific or boring.

La Sierra ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 10% off
Nisa creates beautiful, ethically made underwear, swimwear, and socks empowering women through employment while prioritising sustainable fabrics. The socks are merino based and come in a groovy tic tac toe pattern with five colour variations to choose from. Nisa’s products make a thoughtful, feel-good gift for those new to sustainable fashion or those who are already major Nisa fans (a large portion of Aotearoa New Zealand).
Nooan combines the warmth of merino wool with the durability of possum fur, creating soft and sustainable socks. I know this because I’ve worn them for two years and my feet would be at a loss without them. The materials are ethically sourced and their colours are simply gorgeous; options for everyone. Whether the person you’re buying a gift for is into hiking, lounging, or working, Nooan socks will always be a winner under the Christmas tree.
Norsewear is a cherished Kiwi brand and have been since 1967. Their socks are made in Norsewood, a few hours south of Napier. I’m grateful to have visited the incredible factory this year! Norsewear are known for their hearty, thick socks but they come in all sorts of styles for different activities. Merino and possum are their main fibres and Norsewear even offer some novelty sock options like socks with bicycles or sheep.

Body Wash & Soap
I think we’ve all been gifted a crappy shower gel set or bar of soap for Christmas at some point in our lives. This year, set the trend and support NZ businesses who make their soap from far better ingredients. Perfect for all family members who are still keen on traditional Christmas gifts but deserve to be lathering themselves in soap that’s a bit more sophisticated and better for their skin.

Crafted with the healing powers of kawakawa extract, this soap is unique. Kawakawa has been used for generations to calm and soothe dry, itchy, irritated skin and skin prone to eczema. It provides a deep clean without stripping away natural moisture, leaving skin soft and refreshed. These bars are made with Kawakawa harvested according to prime days in the Maramataka - the Māori lunar calendar - when the essence of the plant is at its most potent.
Oh Goodness ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 10% off
Oh Goodness soaps smell incredible and look like scrumptious cake while being gentle on your skin and on the earth. Oh Goodness takes clean beauty seriously, all their products cruelty free, using naturally derived non-toxic ingredients, consciously packaged with sustainability in mind. I’ve visited their workroom in Wellington; it smells just like heaven.
Moisturiser
These classic Christmas gifts are often found under the Christmas tree from estranged relatives. Instead of those heavily scented, toxic chemical-laden moisturisers and powders, opt for eco-friendly Christmas presents like natural, plant-based moisturisers that nourish the skin. Skip the talcum powder altogether and support eco friendly Christmas gifts from brands that craft products using organic, cruelty-free ingredients.

Cedar and Rose Botanics creates luxurious, plant-based skincare products using organic (wherever possible) and natural ingredients. I discovered them when hunting for natural perfume but their whole skincare range is simple, gentle, and made with people and planet in mind. Amanda, maker and founder of Cedar and Rose carefully sources her ingredients and makes them with love here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Raw Nature ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 20% off (purchases over $50)
Raw Nature offers all-natural, plastic-free skincare products made in New Zealand. Their handmade, small-batch formulations ensure effective, toxin-free personal care. Raw Nature has been a staple in my bathroom cupboard for years and a go-to for gifts. For a gift that promotes both wellness and sustainability, Raw Nature solid moisturiser is a fantastic option. I know the concept of a stick instead of a cream can be scary to some, but it’s an incredibly effective (and mess free for travelling) way to moisturise. I love Raw Nature’s focus on zero waste products and their cruelty free certifications are the icing on the cake.
Scenturie ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 10% off
Scenturie’s natural face moisturiser is a luxurious, plant-based formula designed to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Made with sustainably sourced, cruelty-free ingredients, it provides deep nourishment without harmful chemicals or synthetic additives. They come in a handy travel size too. Scenturie are a small brand, with big impact. I loved finding them in my Uncle’s bathroom earlier this year without my prompting!
Mugs
Instead of the usual ugly novelty mug that no one wants on Christmas, go for sustainable Christmas gifts like these ceramic cups made by local artisans. They’ll get plenty of use and support small businesses, rather than being a dust collector in the cupboard. In my opinion, a mug is a super thoughtful gift. Most people use a mug daily and it’s cool to know they’ll think of you when they have their morning cuppa.
Scented Candles
Scented candles are a classic Christmas gift, but many conventional candles are made from paraffin wax, which releases harmful chemicals when burned. For a more eco-friendly Christmas gift, choose candles made from natural ingredients like soy, beeswax, or coconut wax. Ethical Christmas gifts like these are often scented with essential oils or not scented at all, making them healthier for your home and the planet while still bringing that cozy, festive glow.

Honeywrap ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 10% off (orders over $40)
I’m lucky enough to have these in my home and they really do live up to all they promise. Hand rolled, beeswax candles made from 100% pure New Zealand beeswax make for a delicious smelling natural, sustainable, non-toxic gift. They come in all sorts of sizes at different price points. No extra scents or additions are added to these beauties. Any one would be thrilled to receive a beeswax candle for Christmas!
Wine & Liquor
A bottle of wine or whiskey is a pretty standard Christmas gift, but what about going a bit greener? For a more sustainable Christmas gift, choose organic or biodynamic wines and spirits. There are some great eco-friendly Christmas presents available, with alcohol that’s produced right here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Fugitive Organic are doing things differently; they make spectacular organic wine… in cardboard boxes! Even though sustainability is one of their core values, they certainly haven’t forgotten to focus on flavour. It’s utterly delicious. Their slogan “better for us, better for the land & better for our planet” trumps the other boring wines you’ll find at the liquor store so your gift receiver will feel extra special this Christmas.
Loveblock Wine crafts organic, sustainably farmed wines from Marlborough, New Zealand. Their wines are the epitome of elegance and sustainability, one of the reasons why Tim and I chose them as our wedding wine nearly 8 years ago! Their drops of organic goodness are a great gift to add into a hamper or gift as a solo stand out. Even though (apparently) you should choose wine by the taste and productions ethics as opposed to how pretty the labelling is… I’d choose Loveblock for all of the above. Look at those gorgeous flowers!
TWR Wines (Te Whare Ra) produce organic, biodynamic wines that reflect a deep respect for the land and a commitment to sustainability. Their handcrafted wines are perfect for eco-conscious wine lovers who value quality and ethics. A bottle of TWR wine makes an exceptional Christmas gift or addition to Christmas dinner spread.
Non-Alcoholic Drinks
With more people leaning towards mindful drinking, non-alcoholic drinks make for thoughtful and sustainable Christmas gifts. Skip the sugar-packed soft drinks and look for locally made, low-waste, organic sodas or kombucha. These eco-friendly alternatives to classic Christmas gifts show you care about health and the planet.

Towels & Tea Towels
Novelty tea towels are a classic Christmas gift, but they’re often poor quality and not very practical. Instead, give a sustainable Christmas gift in the form of organic cotton or bamboo towels, which are both functional and earth-friendly. Ethical Christmas gifts like these won’t just sit in a drawer—they’ll be used and appreciated.

Pajamas
Everyone loves a new pair of PJs for Christmas, but fast fashion ones won’t cut it if you’re aiming for a more sustainable Christmas gift. Look for sleepwear made from natural fibres like organic cotton. These eco-friendly Christmas gifts are better for your loved ones’ health and the planet too. If the person you’re buying for is more the ‘wears a t-shirt to bed’ kinda person, read my sustainable t-shirt blog here.
Bhumi Organic ~ ETHICALLYKATE for 25% off
Give the gift of eco-friendly cosiness with The Very Good Bra’s compostable PJs. Made from 100% organic cotton, these super soft and breathable pajamas are a great gift idea. What I love most about their PJ options is that they’re acceptable loungewear too. Choose from basic tee dresses to simple singlets and shorts.
Sunscreen
A summer essential that often sneaks into Christmas stockings, sunscreen can be a more ethical gift than you think. Opt for non-toxic sunscreens that are better for your body and the planet. Sustainable Christmas presents can still be practical, and a good sunblock is the perfect example of how even traditional Christmas gifts can go eco-friendly. Personally, I love sustainable sunscreen as a present. Sunblock is an essential need during New Zealand summers so it’s an incredibly versatile gift too!

Perfume
Perfume is a luxury gift, but many commercial perfumes contain synthetic chemicals and are tested on animals. For a more ethical Christmas gift, consider natural, cruelty-free perfumes with essential oils. These make lovely sustainable Christmas gifts. A few years ago, sustainable perfumes were rare. But now, we have so many options to choose from!

Underwear

Anyone would be stoked to receive a The Very Good Bra garment for Christmas!
Bath Salts & Bombs
Unfortunately, many bath bombs contain harmful chemicals and glitter that pollutes waterways. Look for sustainable Christmas presents like natural bath salts or handmade bombs made with plant-based ingredients. Also, consider if the person you are gifting this to even actually likes (or has access to) a bath. A sustainable gift isn’t sustainable if they won’t use it.

Nail Polish
Personally, I haven’t worn nail polish in well over a year and I don’t plan on going back to it. But for those who do, gifting sustainable nail polishes at Christmas is a great way to deter your friends and family away from toxic chemical filled polishes. However, consider who you’re buying for first. For example, if someone gave me a nail polish for Christmas it would be wasteful. Think first and then chose from these great options below.

Gift Boxes
Sometimes a gift box filled with a range of goodies is the most appropriate gift for your boss, clients, neighbours, or a combined family Christmas gift. We’re lucky to have several amazing companies in Aotearoa New Zealand who gather amazing sustainable brands (many listed in this blog post!) into one place so you can order a gift box while knowing everything inside it is made better.
