Why We Partnered with Eco Choice Aotearoa for the Suburban Homestead Renovation Project

How Much Waste Does New Zealand’s Construction Industry Create?

If we’re serious about sustainable renovation in New Zealand, we have to start with the facts.

According to the Ministry for the Environment, construction and demolition (C&D) waste accounts for an estimated 40–50% of total waste sent to landfill in Aotearoa each year. Some regional studies suggest that building-related waste alone contributes hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually to landfill.

BRANZ (Building Research Association of New Zealand) has also reported that construction waste represents a significant opportunity for emissions reduction, material recovery and circular design improvements across the sector.

That means nearly half of what we bury in landfill is tied to how we build, renovate and demolish.

Renovation culture in New Zealand often means:

  • Rip out

  • Replace

  • Discard

The Suburban Homestead Project is our attempt to interrupt that pattern.

We’re asking:
What would it look like to renovate a 1960s suburban home using independently verified, lower-impact materials - and create a model others can replicate?

That question is what led us to Eco Choice Aotearoa.

What Is Eco Choice Aotearoa and Why Does Certification Matter in Construction?

Eco Choice Aotearoa is New Zealand’s official ecolabel, operating for more than 30 years.

Eco Choice Aotearoa provides independent (third-party) environmental certification for products and services that meet strict environmental criteria.

Their certification:

  • Is based on lifecycle assessment

  • Aligns with ISO 14024 (international Type I ecolabelling standard)

  • Evaluates raw materials, manufacturing, durability, performance and end-of-life

  • Requires businesses to pass science-backed criteria, onsite audits and show evidence of ongoing compliance.

  • Is pass/fail and does not accept carbon offsetting as an alternative to addressing emissions at their source.

In simple terms: Eco Choice certification is not self-declared.

It offers the highest level of assurance for  environmental performance.

In an industry where terms like “eco-friendly” and “sustainable building materials” are often unregulated or loosely defined, third-party certification creates clarity and accountability.

Who Is Eco Choice Aotearoa? Meet the Team Behind the Certification

We recently hosted the Eco Choice Aotearoa team onsite at our Red Beach home to discuss sustainable building materials, lifecycle assessment and why verified certification matters in residential renovation.

Watch the video above to hear directly from Eco Choice about how their certification process works.

How Did the Suburban Homestead Project Partner with Eco Choice Aotearoa?

Before the Suburban Homestead Project had its name, we were sharing renovation ideas with our Patreon community.

One of those community members worked at Eco Choice Aotearoa and reached out.

At the time, Eco Choice Aotearoa had strong representation in commercial construction and industrial supply chains - but residential renovation was less developed within their directory.

We asked a simple question:

What if this suburban renovation became a catalyst for expanding independently certified products into the residential market?

That question turned into months of due diligence, alignment conversations and eventually a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

We aligned on:

  • Independent verification over marketing claims

  • Transparency over trend-driven sustainability

Long-term impact over short-term campaigns

Why Are We Prioritising Eco Choice Certified Building Products in the Suburban Homestead?

For any product category that falls within Eco Choice Aotearoa’s certification scope, we prioritise brands that are:

  • Already Eco Choice certified, or

  • Actively working toward Eco Choice Aotearoa certification

Eco Choice Aotearoa helps introduce and vet aligned brands.
Ethically Kate negotiates partnerships and integrates products into the home.

Where certification exists, it is our gold standard.

While Eco Choice has a wide range of standards, they do not currently certify every category relevant to suburban homesteading.

For example:

  • Solar panels and battery storage

  • Certain electrification technologies

  • Some agricultural systems (chickens, bees)

In those cases, we apply our own due diligence and vetting standards, with guidance from Eco Choice.

How Does Eco Choice Aotearoa Certification Benefit Sustainable Renovation Brands?

If you are a New Zealand building materials supplier, surface manufacturer, cladding provider, roofing supplier or interior product brand, Eco Choice certification provides:

  • Independent environmental credibility

  • Lifecycle-based assessment

  • Recognition through New Zealand’s official ecolabel

  • Differentiation in a crowded sustainability market

Eco Choice is also recognised by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). Their standards are regarded as ‘Best Practice’ and score highly under Green Star and Homestar rating tools, making Eco Choice certified products a first choice for architects, specificers and procurers.

Through the Suburban Homestead Project, certified brands may be:

  • Integrated into a real residential renovation

  • Featured in long-form educational blogs

  • Included in our Suburban Homestead Guide

  • Shared across social platforms

  • Positioned as recommended suppliers for replication

This isn’t a one-off campaign feature.

It’s inclusion in a long-term, replicable renovation model.

How Does Eco Choice Aotearoa Certification Help Homeowners Renovating Sustainably?

For homeowners researching sustainable renovation in New Zealand, Eco Choice Aotearoa certification provides:

  • Independent verification

  • Reduced greenwashing risk

  • Greater transparency around materials

  • Confidence in environmental performance

When we recommend an Eco Choice certified product, it has been independently assessed - not just marketed as “green”.

As the Suburban Homestead grows, our goal is to create a searchable, practical resource where homeowners can confidently identify certified, verified materials.

What Is the Long-Term Goal of the Suburban Homestead Project?

This project is bigger than one home.

New Zealand’s building sector creates enormous waste and environmental impact - but it also represents enormous opportunity.

Suburbia is where most Kiwis live.

Our working big, hairy, audacious goal is to see 2,700 homes across Aotearoa recognised as Suburban Homesteads by 2029 - homes that prioritise:

  • Circular systems

  • Low-waste renovation

  • Energy efficiency

  • Food production

  • Independently certified building materials

If we’re going to aim that high, we need strong, credible foundations.

Eco Choice Aotearoa is part of that foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eco Choice Aotearoa and Sustainable Renovation

What is Eco Choice Aotearoa certification?

Eco Choice Aotearoa certification is New Zealand’s official ecolabel. It provides independent, third-party environmental certification for products and services that meet strict, lifecycle-based criteria.

How does Eco Choice Aotearoa assess sustainable building materials?

Eco Choice Aotearoa evaluates products using lifecycle assessment aligned with ISO 14024 standards. This means materials are assessed across manufacturing, raw materials, durability and end-of-life impacts - not just surface claims. When drafting their  standards, Eco Choice  considers international best practice, while taking into account New Zealand’s unique market realities and regulatory environment.

Does Eco Choice Aotearoa certify solar panels and electrification products?

Currently, Eco Choice Aotearoa does not cover all electrification categories such as solar panels or battery storage. Where certification is not available, products for this project are vetted separately under our own due diligence process.

Can residential renovation brands become Eco Choice Aotearoa certified?

Yes. Eco Choice Aotearoa works across multiple building and construction categories and is increasingly engaging with residential suppliers interested in independent environmental certification. Their standards are regarded as ‘Best Practice’ and score highly under Green Star and Homestar rating tools, ensuring your products are in demand for architects, specifiers and procurers.

Why is construction waste such a big issue in New Zealand?

Construction and demolition waste accounts for an estimated 40–50% of total waste sent to landfill in New Zealand (Ministry for the Environment). Improving material selection and reducing waste in renovation can significantly reduce landfill pressure and emissions.

How can my business be considered for the Suburban Homestead Project?
